Long Coat Ceremony

By: Dr. Lyssa Weatherly

An unornamented, long white coat in any other setting would garner very little attention or interest, but as the universal symbol of the medical profession, it signifies trust, responsibility, and professionalism. And for 157 graduating medical students, it is a symbol of so much more. To these graduates it symbolizes the culmination of four years of rigorous studies, long nights, early mornings, and unwavering dedication. It marks the end of one chapter and the beginning of another.

The Long Coat Ceremony, held on May 22nd, at the Jackson Convention Center, marked the formal investiture of a new group of young physicians. Prior to the presentation of coats, the keynote address was delivered by Marshall Ramsey, Director of the Mississippi Media Lab and Director of Engagement for the Jordan Center at the School of Journalism and New Media at the University of Mississippi. Central to the ceremony is the bestowal of long coats upon the students—a symbolic shift from student to physician, indicating a commitment to uphold professionalism, compassion, and the highest standards of patient care. A notable tradition initiated in 2022 allows students to choose who assists them in donning their white coats, whether it be a family member, friend, or a respected mentor. Adding to the emotional resonance of the ceremony, this allows the students to honor those whose love and encouragement have sustained them throughout their journey. For many, the ceremony is a shared triumph—a reflection of collective sacrifice, resilience, and unwavering belief in these graduates.

I believe I speak for all the School of Medicine faculty when I say that the ceremony is a profound affirmation of what we all know to be true: these graduates are ready. And we could not be more proud of each and every one of them.
